Chunn family papers, 1836-1925 (bulk 1860-1890).

Personal correspondence, legal documents, business records, and maps relating to Elizabeth Word Chunn and her son William Augustus Chunn. Thirty of these folders are approximately 150 letters to Mrs. Chunn from grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, and cousins. They are rich descriptions of men's and women's work, race relations (particularly during Reconstruction), sickness and death, and all the activities of white middle class life, including home economics, teaching, travels, Christmas, and religious affairs in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, and Ohio during this time period.

William Augustus Chunn, Confederate soldier, was born 7 January 1840, near the French Broad River in Tennessee, lived in Cassville, Georgia, and died there in 1921. He served in the Georgia State Troops (1861-1862) as a 2nd Lieutenant (Company I, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade), and as a private in the Georgia Infantry (1862-1865; Co. I, 40th Regiment). Elizabeth Word (Mrs. Samuel L.) Chunn (1820-1894) was born in South Carolina but lived most of her life in Cassville, GA. Her husband farmed their property and did some real estate transactions in Georgia and other states before his death in 1863. Their only child, William Augustus Chunn (1840-1921), served in the 40th Regt. GA Vols. as well as the 1st Regt GA State Troops and participated in the Vicksburg Campaign before returning to raise a family in Cass (later Bartow) Co., GA. ...
